Ghost gear - abandoned and lost fishing nets - threatens all marine wildlife and our sea. Due to its rocky and deep seafloor, the Mediterranean poses a challenge in terms of identification and retrieval of ghost gear. After successful projects in the Baltic Sea, WWF is now testing the use of side scan sonar technologies in the Mediterranean. This would allow us to collect more data on the presence of ghost gear and accelerate their safe retrieval.
