Our agency is led by Maj. Gen. Bret D. Daugherty, who is retiring in June 2024. In this speech delivered in May 2024 to members of the Washington National Guard as well as guests and Washington state employees, he says, "Always anticipate potential threats and prepare for them in advance. It is always better to be prepared and not needed than needed and not prepared. I’ve tried to live by this principle for the last 12 years that I have been your adjutant general and I think it has served us well." As The Adjutant General, he commands all Washington Army and Air National Guard forces and is Director of the State’s Emergency Management and Enhanced 911 programs. General Daugherty also serves as Homeland Security Advisor to the Governor of Washington and as State Administrative Agent for all United States Department of Homeland Security grants awarded to Washington’s state, local, tribal and non-profit agencies and organizations.
