PARIS: French voters were hit with another surprise as polls closed on Sunday evening, following French President Emmanuel Macron's unexpected decision to call snap elections last month. Contrary to pollsters' predictions, the far-right National Party (RN) did not secure the majority of parliamentary seats. In fact, they fell far short.
With voter turnout reaching its highest level in over 40 years, initial estimates indicated that the New Popular Front (NFP), a left-wing coalition formed quickly after Macron's announcement of the legislative elections, would secure the majority of seats.
