Lyrics:
[Chorus:]
We went dancin' across the USA
On that crazy king's highway
Too much passion
Too much play
We went dancin', dancin', dancin' across the USA
Well the curtain falls too early, so they say
Some will go, others just stay and stay
So have a round on me, my friend
Buttercup days are through
You know I'll always love 'em
But I think it's time that we flew
[Chorus:]
We went dancin' across the USA
On that crazy king's highway
Too much passion
Too much play
We went dancin', dancin', dancin' across the USA
I wonder if they'll ever understand
The trials of a freedom-seekin’ man
So have a round on me, my friend
What else can we do?
You know I always love ya
But I think it's time that we flew
[Chorus:]
We went dancin' across the USA
On that crazy king's highway
Too much passion
Too much play
We went dancin', dancin', dancin' across the USA
[Lyrics outro:]
Dancin', dancin', dancin' across the US
We went dancin’ (dancin', dancin', dancin' across the US)
We went dancin' (dancin', dancin', dancin' across the US)
We went dancin' (dancin', dancin', dancin' across the US)
We went dancin' (dancin', dancin', dancin' across the US)
We went dancin' (dancin', dancin', dancin' across the US)
[Fading:]
We went dancin' (dancin', dancin', dancin' across the US)
Songwriter: Lindsey Buckingham
Music Producers: Lindsey Buckingham and Richard Dashut
Video Producer: Eleanor Plant
Buckingham uses extensive repetition in this song; the chorus is used three times in less than three minutes and the lyrical outro adds another 30 seconds. There’s a good reason for arranging the song this way: The heavy repetition, combined with that double-four marching cadence and simple chord progression imparts the feeling of a long, over-the-road journey. It's perfect.
