A local pensioner has been awarded an international life saving honour following his heroic efforts, at sea this summer. Mayor Kaiane Aldorino – Lopez hosted a reception at the City Hall this week to present the award. 74 year old John Chappory, received the Royal Humane Society “Testimonial on Parchment Award” in recognition of his bravery, for rescuing a couple on a yacht after they had become stranded in the Strait.
The Mayor presented his award and a memento to mark the occasion; a photo of another John Chappory, a former bronze medal recipient, recognised for his actions in 1891, when he rescued survivors at sea following the accident between the SS Utopia and HMS Anson. With some saying the resemblance is quite remarkable.
