In the golden years of audio, enthusiasts had the opportunity to audition various equipment prior to making a purchase decision. Nowadays, that is not possible with the rarity of brick and mortar audio shops, social-distancing with Covid-19, and the cessation of listening opportunities at audio stores. Thus, the rationale for LP GEAR's Audition series of videos.
In this video, you will audition three best-buy rated MC cartridges: The Hana EH High Output MC cartridge, the Denon DL-103 low-output MC cartridge and the LP GEAR BIN 323 High Output MC cartridge. To eliminate volume bias, we adjusted the output volume to be the same for all cartridges.
Thoughts: We recorded this batch of cartridges several times prior, with this being the best thus the one chosen here for your listening and viewing pleasure. All three share the same tonal presentation. The outlier is the Hana EH. It has a slightly fatter mid-range thus making it appear clearer, giving a golden roundness to its sound and making the DL103 and the BIN 323 seem a little leaner. To our ears though the DL103 and the BIN323 seem truer - more balanced - with the Hana tuned to be more likable. Comparably, the BIN323 is slightly more dynamic and substantive than the DL-103 which leaned toward a higher pitch and crystalline highs. All these differences are really minuscule and inferences are likewise. Some listeners may not even notice the sonic differences. What did you hear?
