Hosted by the UN Women Centre of Excellence for Gender Equality, the forum “Engaging Men for Ending Gender-Based Violence: 1st Anniversary of the UN Women Centre of Excellence for Gender Equality during ‘16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” took place in Seoul, on 30 November.
The event was attended by around 200 participants, including Kim Hyunsook, Minister of Gender Equality and Family in the Republic of Korea, Alia El-Yassir, Regional Director for UN Women Asia and the Pacific, Caroline Nyamayemombe, Head of UN Women Viet Nam a.i., as well as members of the diplomatic corps in the Republic of Korea, the Women’s Human Rights Institute of Korea, the Korean Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education, military officials, academics, representatives from the private sector and civil society, and gender experts. Kim Eun Mee, President of Ewha Womans University, who was appointed as a National Goodwill Ambassador of UN Women, also participated in the forum.
As a part of the forum, the Centre arranged a special lecture by a world-renowned expert, Dr. Gary Barker, President and CEO of Equimundo Center for Masculinities and Social Justice, a leading NGO working globally in healthy masculinities and engaging men for gender equality.
He delivered a lecture entitled “Talking about Manhood: What Men Have to Do with Ending Gender-Based Violence, and How Men Benefit from Gender Equality” and shared reflections from global research and program experiences on how men’s lives are affected by ideas about manhood and how men can and should be allies to end gender-based violence.
Established in Seoul in 2022 with support from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family of the Republic of Korea, the Centre is the first UN entity in the country dedicated to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment.
