Men’s Health Awareness Month is observed around the world in November. Launched in 2003 as a campaign to highlight prostate cancer, the Movember movement has since evolved into something much bigger: a global initiative to change the way we address and discuss men’s health issues in modern society.
This November, there were no moustache-growing competitions at BUI. Instead, we encouraged frank conversations about the widespread stress, performance pressure, and competition in our industry. In this video, we look at depression in men – and we try to unpack some of the cultural and societal factors behind it.
“As men, we like to think of ourselves as strong and in control of our emotions. When we feel hopeless or overwhelmed by despair, we often try to deny it, or cover it up. But depression is a common problem that affects many of us at some point in our lives, and is not a sign of emotional weakness, or a failing of masculinity. It affects millions of men of all ages and backgrounds, as well as those who care about them: spouses, partners, friends, and family.”
The local Movember campaign is run by The Men’s Foundation of South Africa.
