“Porn performers aren’t afraid of condoms. I used to work for studios that always use condoms, and nobody ever complained. And the stuff we did on set was pretty rough, you know, but the condom never broke. Never slipped. But some producers, they’re so afraid of condoms. They think they’re gonna lose money. So performers on those sets don’t get to use condoms. If you get an infection, that’s too bad. It’s not the producer’s problem, it’s yours.
“There’s a lot of talk about HIV in the porn industry, and yeah it’s a big problem. But nobody ever talks about the other STDs. Chlamydia. Gonorrhea. Syphilis. They’re all serious, but they’re swept under the rug. The health department says there’ve been thousands of chlamydia and gonorrhea infections among porn performers in California. But producers tell performers to just pay for treatment, like take an STD holiday and get back to work. Employers are supposed to keep us safe. But last time I checked, STDs aren’t safe.
“The adult film industry doesn’t want performers using condoms. They make up ridiculous excuses. They say things like ‘testing is more effective than a latex barrier.’ But testing isn’t prevention. Condoms are prevention. When it comes to protecting workers in a legal California industry, condoms are the best option. The adult film industry needs to stop making up excuses and start following the law. This is about fairness.” - Joshua Rodgers
