Cincinnati City Hall, June 19, 2020
City Council members held an event to commemorate Juneteenth by flying the Juneteenth flag outside of City Hall. This is the first time in history that Cincinnati has raised the flag, which commemorates the end of American slavery in 1865, nearly 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. On this day in Galveston, Texas, the remaining slaves who had not yet been freed despite Lincoln's intentions were officially emancipated from their servitude.
Cincinnati has had a Juneteenth celebration, also known as Jubilee or Black Independence Day, since 1988 after Cincinnati resident Lydia Morgan returned from a trip to Arizona where she first witnessed a small celebration of the holiday. When she returned, she set about creating Cincinnati Juneteenth Festival, which has grown into a major event over its 30+ year history.
