One troll can be harmless. Thousands of trolls are a weapon. But what makes them powerful? And what are the most notorious troll farms in the world?
In slang, an online troll is a person who posts false accusations and provocative remarks to promote an agenda or to insult others. Some trolls do it out of boredom, anger, or fun. Others are full-time employees. Governments may hire troll farms to shift public opinion and distract people’s attention. What troll farms are the most famous?
50 Cent Party in China. The name has nothing to do with the famous rapper. The 50 Cent Party’s title derives from the fact that a troll gets 50 cents for each post they make. The main purpose of these trolls is to derail critical discussions about the Chinese Communist Party. And to form public opinion.
Another well-known troll farm is the Internet Research Agency from Russia. Linked to Russian oligarch Yevgeny Prigozhin, the IRA is based in Saint Petersburg, Russia. This troll agency has employed fake accounts on major social networking sites, video hosting services, and discussion boards. All to promote the Kremlin's political interests, including Ukraine and the Middle East. They also attempted to influence the 2016 United States presidential election. Since then, some of the ex-trolls have given their confessions about what it was like to work in a Russian troll factory.
One more notorious troll farm – the AK Trolls from Turkey. Being in favor of the Justice and Development party or the AKP, these trolls promote state propaganda and orchestrate campaigns against those who oppose the current government. In 2020, Twitter suspended more than 7,000 accounts after detecting they operated in favor of the AKP. The government denies all accusations.
There are more troll farms in the world. For sure. Yet most of them are very difficult to identify. But the ones we mentioned show that trolls are a powerful tool to spread disinformation. That’s why fact-checking is so important in today’s world.
