I understand that this wonderfully comforting hymn was written by the Irish-born Canadian preacher after the experience a series of similar tragedies: the drowning of his fiance on the day before his wedding and the loss of a second fiance to severe illness weeks before their wedding. Scriven would also lose his mother to illness. From this grief he wrote the words that have now comforted many with the solace of Jesus.
