Reading for Vocabulary is a four-level reading series for young learners of English at ages 10 or above. The series aims to develop young learners’ vocabulary and overall language skills through exposure to a variety of topics. The series instructor Brian Stuart provides for learners a highly dynamic and entertaining lessons. So learners will be able to learn a large number of vocabulary with fun and ease.
💓 Lesson 7 Do You Hear That?
What’s that sound? That’s an easy question. Maybe you hear a bell or the phone ringing. But what if I asked you what is sound? That question may seem much harder, but it’s really not. Think of sound as energy that we can hear.
Sound is made when things vibrate, or move back and forth quickly. All sorts of things vibrate and make sound. We make sounds when we talk and sing. So how do we vibrate? Well, there are parts inside of our necks that vibrate. Let’s try an experiment. Put your hand on the side of your neck.
Now start talking. You can feel these parts vibrating as you speak. We make music by making things vibrate too. Pluck the strings on a guitar. Do you see the strings moving? They’re vibrating and making sounds.
Sounds are not all the same. Pitch is how high or low a sound is. Can you think of some low sounds? Listen to your stomach rumble the next time you are hungry. This is a deep, low sound. Other sounds have a high pitch, like whistles and police car sirens.
Volume is how loud or soft a sound is. We need more energy to make louder sounds. Think about when you hit a drum. The harder you hit it, the louder the sound is. If you strike it gently, it makes a soft sound.
Sounds also help keep us safe. Some sounds are warnings . When a car honks its horn, it means we should get out of the way. When we hear a fire alarm, we know to go to a safe place.
