A landlord in California struggled to evict a nonpaying tenant for more than two years. The tenant held on with the help of free legal assistance from the city costing the landlord more than $20,000 in lost rent.
Finally, the landlord was able to get rid of the tenant by paying them $10,000 in cash to leave. This is a perfect example of why strict eviction laws, free legal help to tenants, and policies against property rights hurt small landlords.
