Norway is famous for its beautiful fjords. Over 1000 fjords can be found around the country. But what exactly IS a fjord? Even some of the locals we asked didn't really know! In this episode of "How to Norway", Dag and Katarina share a few points on what makes a fjord a fjord:
- The water in a fjord is seawater! A fjord is connected to the ocean, so it’s like a backwards ocean river going INTO the country!
- The fjords are a result of the ice age! The ice carved out U-shaped valleys that got filled with seawater.
- A fjord has to be longer than it is wide.
- Norway is the country in the world that is best known for having fjords.
- The word "fjord" is a Norwegian word used in many languages.
- Being home to more than 1,200 fjords, Norway has the second longest coastline in the world. Not bad for the 61st-largest country on the planet.
- Norwegians live by the fjord, travel on them, fish and swim in them. Just like the Vikings used to do!
