Our hygienist in Lincoln, NE answers CAQ "Why do my gums bleed?"
Our mouths have many different types of bacteria. If a balance is lost between good and bad bacteria, our body can respond with either acute or chronic inflammation.
When this happens, our gums start bleeding while flossing or brushing.
Acute inflammation is a short-term inflammation, usually from an injury of some kind to the body. Once treated, it usually resolves quickly. In the mouth, when we have acute inflammation in the gums or gingivitis, with prompt treatment it too will usually go away within a few days or weeks and the gums will stop bleeding. Chronic inflammation usually comes from an ongoing process of the body dealing with infection or from other systemic causes like inflammatory medical conditions. It can lead to what is called periodontal disease, or bone and gum disease. If the inflammation in the gum tissue remains chronic or ongoing, this can lead to gums bleeding and bone loss around the teeth and ultimately loss of teeth. Treating Periodontal disease will help to control bleeding gums and with treatment, gums will stop bleeding.
