Ep. 21 Mosaic mirrored candle sconce on hand-made substrate, my nephew’s owl, A field trip to The Atlanta Artists Center, the crow/raven, a new sunflower & 6 sparkly ✨ stars!
Time stamps:
I kick off the week working on a Hydroban substrate I was testing to find out how sturdy it would be when scored and curved, with mesh and thinset added to hold the curve. I added colored mirror mosaic in blue and silver with neutral cure silicone adhesive. Then it is grouted with black sanded grout, taking special care in cleaning. I finished it with semi gloss black paint on the edges and back.
3:29 Day by Day is finished up by wiring the back.
4:48 A visit to the Atlanta Artist Center in Buckhead, GA. Visiting your local gallery is a fantastic way to get a free art fix. Seeing art in person is the BEST way to see art! The colors are more vibrant and the scale of the pieces is concrete.
6:35 I begin the crow with a lesson learned: Don't use E6000 for beads on a 3-D form! The beads slip and slide all over. Apoxie Sculpt is the solution, and I also used it to finish the edges of the little fall mosaic. I also used it to create a stand!
8:06 I nip an inventory of petal shapes for a new flower project. Starting with small stained glass rectangles, I nip a curve on one side. Then I add the pieces around the center of the sunflower.
9:11 Will the projects ever end? The star substrates from Michael's receive tempered glass using Weldbond, then they are grouted with black sanded grout.
BONUS: I found a bunch of thick wood cutouts that are awesome lil' mosaic substrates from Michael's!
EXTRA BONUS: My nephew makes an appearance to work on his owl mosaic!
