Fast Facts:
– County Wexford’s Hook Lighthouse is one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world, dating back a whopping 800 years!
– As the ancient seat of the High Kings of Leinster, the Rock of Cashel is where St Patrick is rumoured to have inadvertently baptised King Aengus when he placed his sharp, pointed crosier on the king’s foot under the water.
– The fearsome fortress of Spike Island, which lies off the coast of County Cork, is home to a 6th century monastery, a star-shaped army fortress and a former prison full of convicts, rioters and villains!
– Leap Castle in County Offaly is one of the most haunted places in Ireland. Its gruesome history is said to have conjured a malevolent being known as the Elemental.
– Found in County Westmeath on the Hill of Uisneach, the Catstone (Ail na Mireann) is said to mark the resting place of Éiru, the goddess of Ireland, and symbolises this spot as the heart of Ireland, where leaders of the five provinces gathered for counsel.
