Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist party has won the Indian national elections with a majority. But who is the man who will become India's new Prime Minister?
Narendra Modi, the controversial Hindu nationalist leader, has promised "good days are coming" in his first reaction to a historic
victory by his Bharatiya Janata Party in national elections.
But who is the man who will be India's new Prime Minister?
Narenda Modi, 63, is a Hindu nationalist leader and head of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
His party's victory and majority topples the ruling Congress Party, which has been in power for decades.
Mr Modi will replace Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister of India.
He was born in 1950 into a lower middle class family in Gujarat but he has risen to be one of India's most controversial and powerful politicians.
He has steered Gujarat state as chief minister since 2001 and is seen as a no-nonsense leader.
Mr Modi has pledged to strengthen decision making, boost investment in industry and infrastructure.
He is hated by some since the 2002 sectarian riots in Gujarat in which 1000, mostly Muslims, were massacred.
He has been cleared of involvement but has refused to apologise for loss of life.
Mr Modi's outlook is guided by civilisational identity of India, defence of India and an Indian world view, not a European one.
As Prime Minister he'll be in charge of 1.25 billion people. And a nuclear arsenal.
