Join Andrew Maynard, a scientist, author and leading expert on emerging technologies and the future, as he explains the challenges of developing responsible, beneficial and, above all, ethical applications of artificial intelligence.
In this playlist, you’ll explore some of the key social and ethical risks associated with AI. You’ll learn about myths and the reality of superintelligence, and the potential challenges it brings. You’ll also investigate the pitfalls of algorithmic bias and how AI potentially impacts social justice and equity.
This playlist won’t provide you with too many answers, which is as it should be, as ethical and responsible technological innovation is complex. However, it’ll help you better understand the types of questions we should all be asking if we’re to see this technology being used in ways that improve our lives, rather than make them harder — especially for people who are too often marginalized by technology innovation. This playlist intentionally sets out to entertain you, to challenge you and to make you think more deeply about the part we can all play in building a more just, equitable and exciting technological future.
Maynard is associate dean for student success in the College of Global Futures and director of the Arizona State University Risk Innovation Nexus, where he works with entrepreneurs and others to connect ethical and responsible innovation with value growth.
Maynard’s 2018 book, “Films from the Future,” provides a unique and thought-provoking perspective on the ethical development of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, while his most recent book, “Future Rising,” explores our relationship with the future and our collective responsibility to it.
