(3 Jan 2018) French President Emmanuel Macron announced several measures to fight what he described as the possible influence of fake news and the political and financial powers that disseminate it to sway the outcome of the country's elections.
Addressing media executives and journalists at the Elysee Palace, Macron vowed to have a draft bill ready by the end of 2018 imposing new rules of transparency for content producers and online platforms.
He announced media outlets funded by foreign entities would come under the close scrutiny of a revamped regulatory body with the authority to cancel broadcasting rights.
Under the new law, Macron said websites would have to say who is financing them and the amount of money for sponsored content would be capped.
He added that Europe had to fight "illiberal tendencies" in other countries towards media freedom, including among European member states.
