Is it okay to put a soldier’s remains on display? Should the sacrifice of the generations who fought pre-1914 be forgotten? Is it right to remember ‘great men’ while forgetting the ‘rank and file’? In this talk, the Chair of the Napoleonic & Revolutionary War Graves Charity, Dr Zack White, will explore how we remember the dead of the American War of Independence, the Wars of the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars. Offering insights into the increasingly frequent phenomenon of remains of veterans being uncovered, he will ask probing questions about the complex ethical issues of how we regard their remains, and how to encourage fresh generations to engage with local connections to a key period in history.
