Tesla may be known for turning the automobile industry on its head and pioneering battery-powered vehicles and power solutions, but that may not be the case. Elon Musk, the company's CEO, has long promised a future of fully autonomous automobiles, but its Full Self-Driving feature, despite its name, falls short. The capability has been one of Tesla's most contentious features, and Musk's latest pre-announcement further adds to the debate.
Tesla vehicles have two characteristics with names that pique the imagination while also causing some misunderstanding. Autopilot, which is standard on all models, provides basic driver assistance such as automated emergency braking, while the extra Full Self-Driving package adds more features such as automatic lane shifting and "smart summon." The two labels have been called deceptive since drivers believe they can keep their hands off the wheel despite Tesla's tiny language and frequent warnings.
