Here he is, in full bloom and glory!.. or not. Well all I can say is that this orchid acts very strange. But I love it!

The Chysis bractescens is an orchid species native the Central America. It produces pendulous pseudobulbs that can sometimes look quite bulky. It is also a deciduous orchid, but doesn't take a dormancy.

The flowers are usually white, but there are some varieties that have a pale brown splash on the petals. Buds form on a short flower spike while the new growth is immature and the flowers are about 6-7 cm in diameter. The lips is a bright yellow and looks like it has teeth!

Now this orchid is fragrant. However I was expecting a vanilla fragrance, like articles and people suggest. To me this one smells like Gardenia flowers. If my nose is weird or my particular orchid is different, I cannot say.

The flowers closed at night for me and opened during day time. the first flower lasted only for one week, this is not really normal behavior as far as I understand, but it is the first blooming of my young orchid, maybe this influences the behavior.

I love the fragrance as it is, but am a bit disappointed in the bloom time. We shall see what happens next season and a care tutorial will come soon. Enjoy!
