Easter is the Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the oldest Christian tradition and is considered to be the most important date on the Christian calendar. Easter marks the end of the 40-day period of Lent, which is a traditional time of fasting that begins on Ash Wednesday. The week before Easter is known as Holy Week. This begins on Palm Sunday and includes Maundy Thursday (the day of the Last Supper), Good Friday (the day of Christ’s crucifixion) and Holy Saturday (the time between the crucifixion and resurrection). Easter falls on the first Sunday after the full moon following the March equinox, so the date changes every year.
I’ve been asked many times why I’ve never done a set for Easter, so I thought I’d explain why now. I actually grew up going to a Federated church every Sunday and participated in youth group through high school. Sometime after college I made the choice to no longer associate with Christianity and found my path in spirituality instead. Doing sets on other religions has been easier for me because I have no personal connection to these holidays and could very much start from scratch. This year I finally decided to do an Easter set (in fact I did two: one cutesie Easter bunny and this set about the meaning of Easter) and while I have personally gone down a different path, I still wanted this set to respectfully represent the true meaning of Easter and what felt most authentic to me was to channel the Easter of my childhood. Our youth group always hosted the Easter sunrise service, so my memories of Easter are filled with frigid early morning Vermont sunrises, powerful worship songs, community, Palm Sunday cross making, Easter egg hunts and the budding of new life in the ground.
Huge shoutout to my dear friends and consultants for this set Gina and Emily. Gina’s passion for and devotion to Christianity & the Catholic religion helped me to see this holiday (and religion) in a new light. Emily’s friendship is one of the best things to come out of my time in youth group, and it was a joy to relive moments of that past with her and I tackled this set. Thank you Gina and Emily 🤍
