David Aaronovitch says that the function of fee-paying schools is to prevent downwards social mobility. Public school parents are ensuring that relatively mediocre children can get better jobs. So, though only 7% of the population go to these schools, their pupils make up 70% of judges and 40% of politicians. Everything public schools do, he claims, is to purchase competitive advantage. Their fees rose 43% between 2003 and 2008, simply so that they could outcompete the state sector in building flashy facilities and paying teachers higher wages.
