Ashtapada is just one of a family of similar strategy games from India - the birthplace of many popular board games. The Buddha included it on his list of games he would not play because they were distractions from his sacred journey.

NOTE: Within this video, I made a bit of a boo-boo. The "logo" I made for Ashdapada includes the word in English and beneath that is the word for "Dashapada" in devanagari script. I obviously intended "Ashdapada" in both places. My mistake - sorry about that.

Ashtapada predates the game of Chess by several hundred years, but there's some question about the 8x8 board.

Most of the "cousins" of Ashtapada are played on boards with an odd number of spaces. The center space and center of each edge are significant as single spaces. For example, Ashta-Kashti is played on 7x7 board, and some say that Ashtapada is an adaptation of Ashta-Kashti to make use of the 8x8 Chess Board. Others say that the 8x8 Ashtapada board was adapted to play Chaturanga (the ancestor of Chess).

Whatever the real history, this is a popular race game in India and beyond, partly because it can be played on the ubiquitous 8x8 "checker board" with common pieces.
