My translation of the Russian Fable from Russian into Sanskrit

वृक्षसूकरकथा
vṛkṣasūkarakathā
Story about the Oak Tree and the Pig

बाँजकस्याधराद्भूमौ सूकरश्चरितुं गतः ।
वनस्पतेः फलानीच्छन्भोक्तुं वृद्धस्य शाखिनः ॥१॥

Under the Oak-Tree a Pig went to roam about on the earth, willing to enjoy the fruits of the Lord of the Forest, the Old Tree.

bāñjakasyādharād bhūmau sūkaraś carituṃ gataḥ /
vanaspateḥ phalānīcchan bhoktuṃ vṛddhasya śākhinaḥ //1//

तृप्ततामागमद्भूयो भुक्त्वा लाभमशेषतः ।
परिश्रमेण सुष्वाप जजागार ततः पुनः ॥२॥

She became abundantly satisfied having completely consumed her gain. Having become tired she fell asleep, and then she woke up afresh.

tṛptatām āgamad bhūyo bhuktvā lābham aśeṣataḥ /
pariśrameṇa suṣvāpa jajāgāra tataḥ punaḥ //2//

शय्याया आगमत्सालं तरोर्मूलान्यवेक्ष्य हि ।
तान्युत्क्रष्टुं परारेभे पोत्रधारी स्वनासया ॥३॥

From her bed she approached the tree, and as she saw its roots the Snout-Holder began to extract and put them aside with her nose.

śayyāyā āgamat sālaṃ taror mūlāny avekṣya hi /
tāny utkraṣṭuṃ parārebhe potradhārī svanāsayā //3//

काकोलो वृक्षशाखासु तिष्ठन्वाराहमीक्षते ।
मा कृधीत्यब्रवीत्पक्षी होन्मूलो म्रियते तरुः ॥४॥

The Raven was sitting amidst the branches of the Tree, and as he saw the Hog the bird told her: “Don’t do that! Alas, the Tree without its roots will die”.

kākolo vṛkṣaśākhāsu tiṣṭhan vārāham īkṣate /
mā kṛdhīty abravīt pakṣī honmūlo mriyate taruḥ //4//

हास्यते सूकरेणैव दुर्बोधेन जडेन च ।
किमनेन बलूतेन कोऽर्थोऽस्मिन्वृक्ष इत्यतः ॥५॥

The foolish and stupid Pig laughed (and said): “Why do I need this Oak? What is the utility of this tree?

hāsyate sūkareṇaiva durbodhena jaḍena ca /
kim anena balūtena ko ’rtho ’smin vṛkṣa ity ataḥ //5//

यदि मारयितुं शक्ये वृक्षकं तं निरर्थकम् ।
शुष्कतां गमयन्धीरां शोचनं नोत्थितं मयि ॥६॥

If I can kill this useless Tree, and cause it to become totally dry, no grief will be borne in me.

yadi mārayituṃ śakye vṛkṣakaṃ taṃ nirarthakam /
śuṣkatāṃ gamayan dhīrāṃ śocanaṃ notthitaṃ mayi //6//

अन्यथा यदि लोपः स्याद्बलूतेऽस्मिन्वनस्पतौ ।
सन्दिग्धो विषयो मा भूत्फलबाहुल्यमुत्तमम् ॥७॥

Otherwise if any harm happens to this Oak, the Lord of the Forest, it should not be quite a problematic affair. The multitude of fruits is the most important thing!

anyathā yadi lopaḥ syāt balūte ’smin vanaspatau /
sandigdho viṣayo mā bhūt phalabāhulyam uttamam //7//

भुक्त्वा फलानि पीनोऽहं मेदो मे वर्धते सदा ।
इत्युक्त्वा शक्यते श्रोतुं सूकरेण तदोत्तरम् ॥८॥

Having eaten those acorns, I became fat. My corpulence steadily grows”, — having said this, the Pig was able to hear the answer (of the Tree).

bhuktvā phalāni pīno ’haṃ medo me vardhate sadā /
ity uktvā śakyate śrotuṃ sūkareṇa tadottaram //8//

तमुवाच किरिं वृक्षः प्रहसन्पोत्रधारिणम् ।
कृतज्ञो भव मूर्खोऽसि न त्वया ज्ञायते लघु ॥९॥

The (Oak)-Tree spoke to this Pig and mocked the Snout-Holder: “Be grateful! You are stupid because you don’t understand easily.

tam uvāca kiriṃ vṛkṣaḥ prahasan potradhāriṇam /
kṛtajño bhava mūrkho ’si na tvayā jñāyate laghu //9//

नो चेत्स्वपोत्रमुद्धार्य तथोर्ध्वं द्रष्टुमर्हसि ।
शस्यानि मम शाखासु यैः फलैरुपजीवसि ॥१०॥

Unless you elevate your snout upwards, you won’t be able to see in my branches these acorns on which you subsist!”

no cet svapotram uddhārya tathordhvaṃ draṣṭum arhasi /
śasyāni mama śākhāsu yaiḥ phalair upajīvasi //10//

सूकरोऽज्ञः स्वमन्दत्वे निन्दयञ्छास्त्रशासनम् ।
क्षिपते सर्वपाण्डित्यं तत्फलानि तु भक्षते ॥११॥

The ignorant pig in its dullness, letting blame instruction of the systems (and books) of knowledge, rejects also any erudition, but (surely) uses its fruits.

sūkaro ’jñaḥ svamandatve nindayañ chāstraśāsanam* /
kṣipate sarvapāṇḍityam tatphalāni tu bhakṣate //11//

(निन्दञ्छास्त्राणि शासनम् इति पाठान्तरः, "blaming books of knowledge as well as academic instruction")
