James Naismith was born on November 6, 1861 in Ontario, Canada. He was Orphaned at an early age; moving in with his aunt and uncle due to his parents demise.He invented basketball at the age of 30 in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. During the cold New England winter James was given orders by Dr Luther Gulick, was instructed by Dr. Luther Gulick, head of Physical Education there to create an indoor game to keep its track athletes in shape. He was given 14 days to do this. Analyzing the games of his time he chose the soft soccer ball as the most safe for indoors.He wanted to make the goal unguardable and placed a peach basket to the wall 10 ft above the players head. He mixed his old favorite game of duck on a rock by having players throw a soft lobbing shot. He wrote the original basketball rule book with 13 rules, but now the NBA rule book has 66 pages The original 1891 "Basket Ball" court in Springfield College used a peach basket attached to the wall.
By the year 1893, basketball was introduced internationally by the YMCA; which played a vital role in the spreading of the game. Albert Spalding a major league baseball player between 1871-1878 developed its 1st basketball in 1894.
He was the First-ever campus basketball coach from 1898–1907.James is still the only coach in Kansas men's basketball history with a losing record. In 1936 the Olympics introduced men's basketball as part of the games; where there James gave out the medals to 3 North American basketball teams: United States, for the gold medal, Canada, for the silver medal, and Mexico, for their bronze medal win. 10 Years later the NBA was first game was played on Nov. 1, 1946. He Died on November 28, 1939 at the age of 78.
Every year the city of James Almonte, Ontario, hosts an annual 3-on-3 tournament for all ages and skill levels in his honor. Today Naismith's fingerprint is seen on almost every city, community, and park in the world; being played by more than 300 million people all over the globe, making it one of the most popular sports.
