Tanks belonging to the Turkish Armed Forces were seen near the Syrian border in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa on Monday. Their presence is a response to attacks on Turkish territory by stray mortar shells coming from the conflict across the border with Syria.
Eight mortar shells have fallen on the Turkish border town of Suruç over the past two days, triggering unease amongst residents. The presence of the tanks is to reassure the population, as well as to retaliate in the event of an incursion from groups across the border.
