Dr. Nina Silber, author of Daughters of the Union: Northern Women Fight the Civil War and Gender and the Sectional Conflict, offers a complex account of the activities and attitudes of women in the North during the Civil War, and compares their role to that of women in the Confederacy. Northern women's wartime participation in partisan politics, and their service as active contributors to the war effort, would prove to be crucial starting points for the late-nineteenth-century feminist struggle for social and political equality.
