The European head for the World Health Organization has warned that the coronavirus was once again spreading "alarmingly" across parts of the continent, and said rising case numbers should serve as "a wake-up call" for everyone.
Dr Hans Kluge said the fastest rate of increase was among adults aged 25 to 49 years old, but added that cases were rising faster among older people too.
"Although these numbers reflect more comprehensive testing, it also shows alarming rates of transmission across the region," he said.
He called for "regional coherence", saying the virus had shown itself to be merciless "whenever partisanship and disinformation prevailed."
"Where the pandemic goes from here is in our hands," Dr Klugs said. "We have fought it back before and we can fight it back again."
