The Rashtrakuta Dynasty was an Indian Royal Dynasty which ruled over much of the Western Deccan region between 8th & 10th centuries. The Elichpur branch of this dynasty served as feudatories to the Badami Chalukyas for much of 6th & 7th centuries. In 735 AD during the rule of Badami Chalukya King – Kirtivarman II, the Rashtrakutas revolted and overthrew the Badami Chalukyas under Rashtrakuta chieftain Dantivarman II who went on to become the 1st King of the Rashtrakuta Dynasty.
The Rashtrakutas would go on to rule much of present day Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra & Madhya Pradesh states for nearly 250 years with Manyakheta as capital. The Rashtrakutas briefly expanded their kingdom to an extent where the boundary of the kingdom stretched from River Yamuna in North to River Kaveri in South and from Gujarat in west to Chattisgarh in East. The contemporaries of the Rashtrakuta Dynasty in the North were the famous Gurjara-Pratihara & the Pala Dynasties with whom the Rashtrakutas were at constant war for territory whereas in the South Vengi Chalukyas, Pandyas, Cholas and the Pallavas were the contemporaries of the Rashtrakutas. The Rashtrakutas who rose to prominence while serving as feudatories to the Badami Chalukyas lost power to the Western Chalukyas who descended from the Badami Chalukya Royal House. The Rashtrakutas had marital relations not just with the Badami Chalukyas but also with the Kalyani Chalukyas, Vengi Chalukyas and the Pallavas.
