Veljo Tormis, one of the top composers of choir music in today's Estonia, has written extremely few pieces for solo instruments. Of those 3, Preludes and Fugues remains one of the most remarkable, due to its idiosyncratic combination of folk-derived material, rigorous polyphonic structures and 20th century compositional methods.
Preludes and Fugues is dedicated to Lilian Semper, the first performer of the work.
