Formation of membrane attack complexes (MACs) by the terminal components of the complement system, as part of the innate immune system.
MACs damage the membrane integrity of the targeted cell, leading to the free passage of water and solutes across the cell membrane, the loss of cell homeostasis, the disruption of the proton gradient across the membrane, and the eventual death of the cell.
