In this video we explore some of our favorite foods in Malaysia's food capital!
George Town, Penang is known as Malaysia's food capital, and after spending about a week here we could definitely understand why. There is influence from many of the nearby communities and nations including India, Singapore, China, and many more. Today, we decided to take you along with us to show off some of our favorite foods we've found here as well as a few foods that are new to us!
The first stop on our tour, and probably Marshall's favorite, would be roti canai. Roti, meaning bread, can be made in many different ways and the stall we went to has many different varieties. Roti canai itself is served in a number of ways but here they prepared it with a curry sauce and chicken leg. The roti is made of thin layers of dough, packed with some egg, cheese, and seasonings. Paired with the curry and chicken, this was Marshall's favorite breakfast and he insisted we go back multiple times throughout our stay here.
The next stop ended up having multiple foods, all of which we loved! We went just across the street because George Town has great food everywhere and this place looked fun and lively. We got a few dishes here including baby pasembur and char kway teow, and finished it off with some cendol for dessert. Baby pasembur was a very interesting dish that felt like an appetizer. It was thin, fried balls with different spices and vegetables on the inside. For being fried, it was surprisingly refreshing and very tasty! The dessert was something we had been interested in trying yet skeptical that we would like it. It's made with green rice flour jelly, beans, coconut milk, palm sugar, and ice, which to us was an unlikely combination... It turned out to be really good, though! All the flavors matched well and came together to form a very unique dessert perfect for a hot day.
The day ended with something less traditional but great nevertheless. We got some mango teas from one of our favorite George Town cafes as a way to relax from our travel day. We didn't do too much for this food tour, but we definitely were stuffed and got some of our favorites!
