It’s not bad service, it’s Italy! 🙈🇮🇹👌

Did you know that when eating out in Italy, the wait staff will never GIVE you il conto (the bill), unless YOU ask for it. This isn’t bad service, this is custom.

In Italy, it’s considered rude for the waiter to give you the bill/check before you’ve asked for it. Meal time is sacred and savoured in Italian culture. It’s a special time to catch up with friends and family so they just don’t want to rush you and be rude by giving you the bill so you hurry up and leave.

There is even a proverb that beautifully sums this idea up perfectly, A tavola non s’invecchia mai!, meaning ‘you don’t grow old at the dinner table’.

To ask for the bill, just say, il conto, per favore!
