New Zealand music month is here! This month, I’m going to post some covers from my favourite New Zealand artists to celebrate, and give a little bit of backstory on the band I’ve chosen to cover.
First up I’ve chosen Sophie by Goodshirt. Goodshirt formed in Grey Lynn, Auckland in 2000, after keyboardist/bassist/vocalist Gareth Thomas left his recording equipment with guitarist Murray Fisher and guitarist/vocalist Rodney Fisher, who are brothers. While a 3 piece, they submitted a song to a radio competition, and through that gained the manager of that radio station as their own manager, and shortly after drummer Mike Beehre joined as well. They grew to become one of New Zealand’s number one bands very quickly, with Sophie hitting number one in the charts after it’s release in 2001. In 2005, the band took a hiatus as Rodney shifted to London to join Breaks Co-Op, but got back together in 2011, and in 2012 began playing support gigs for Hall & Oates and Icehouse. As of 2022 they are still together and playing shows, however their last release came in 2012. They’ve released 2 studio albums and 1 EP.
I absolutely adore this song, having grown up listening to it on the radio all the time. It’s a song I used to busk outside the 4 square in Amberley when I was 15/16, but I always skipped the solo bits. I really enjoyed learning this one properly after all this time, hopefully I’ve done it justice 😁
