Tonight on The MycoGeeky Podcast we sit down with Stephen Russell, Harte Singer, Damon Tighe, and Kyle Canan to discuss how and why they sequence fungi, and why more amateur cultivators and citizen mycologists should consider giving it a try.
Stephen Russell is the President and Founder of The Hoosier Mushroom Society, author of The Essential Guide to Cultivating Mushrooms, has an MS in Environmental Science from Indiana University Bloomington, and is a Ph.D. candidate at Purdue University working on a DNA-based survey of all the macrofungi of Indiana. He is one of the primary experts on utilizing nanopore technology to sequence fungi.
Harte Singer is an undergraduate student at Cal State East Bay studying cell and molecular biology. He sits on the board of Bay Area Applied Mycology and has taught mycology workshops at Counter Culture Labs, a community science space in Oakland California. He owns and operates Dikarya, LLC, a company providing custom small-scale fungal DNA barcoding and analysis as well as select supplies for the amateur mycologist.
Damon Tighe has a BS in Biology/Chemistry from Saint Mary’s College in California. He was a high school teacher in Portland Oregon, was a researcher on the Human Genome Project, and developed techniques to sequence entire genomes from single bacterial cells. His interest in mycology started by running out of food on the John Muir Trail in California where he remembers seeing large mushrooms and wishing he knew if he could eat them. Over the next 15 years, he became interested in their biodiversity and was able to apply his professional background in Sanger Sequencing and next-generation sequencing platforms to help identify mushrooms.
Kyle is an avid naturalist, mushroom enthusiast, and lover of trees. Kyle is a board member of the Ohio Mushroom Society and on the DNA Sequencing committee for NAMA. Kyle is most fascinated with mushrooms and their incredible properties; medicinal, psychoactive, edible, etc. He collects and documents all mushrooms he encounters, preserving them in his personal fungarium. He has created his own at-home lab that includes microscopes and DNA extraction equipment. Kyle is currently finishing his B.S. in Environmental Sciences this year.
