Sexual Assault Forensic Exams (SAFEs) are medical forensic exams that give survivors access to medical care and evidence collection services free of cost and without requiring them to speak to law enforcement. It's critical that students understand their options when it comes to medical care and evidence collection, their rights over the evidence collected from their body or belongings, and their options when seeking care that is accessible and trauma-informed.
During this session, we will highlight the care options that exist in Maryland, sexual assault evidence kit (SAEK) rights, newly passed legislation that addresses SAEK storage and preservation, and the work Maryland is doing to address the emergence of do-it-yourself evidence kits. Specifically, survivors should be informed of the potential issues with admissibility of do-it-yourself evidence kits in legal proceedings.
