In a country hurting from racism and oppression, the Broadway cast of Hamilton used the words of Langston Hughes, Bob Marley and Lin-Manuel Miranda to call for peace and equality. That was in 2016. Now, four years later, as we reel yet again in anger and despair, the impassioned pleas for justice continue to resonate.
We stand with those who walk in fear simply for being black. #BlackLivesMatter.
But with words must come action.
So, on behalf of Broadway and the entire theater community, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is donating $25,000 to Color Of Change (colorofchange.org), which is doing difficult, important and immediate work challenging injustice and holding leaders accountable. This now-annual donation is just one step in our long-standing commitment.
We will continue to listen and educate ourselves, and call out others, on how we can best lift up our black colleagues, artists, community members and supporters. Lives depend on it.
In "America," Javier Muñoz and Syndee Winters led the integration of song and word, with Karla Puno Garcia as the number’s choreographer. The performers included Hope Easterbrook, David Guzman, Gregory Haney, Roddy Kennedy, Kamille Upshaw and Zelig Williams with Robin Macatangay on guitar. The arrangement is by Kurt Crowley.
"America" was first performed December 5 and 6, 2016, at the 28th annual Gypsy of the Year competition (now called Red Bucket Follies).
