The form of cities can largely be explained by the eras in which they developed. Land uses, and their distribution in space, produce demands for travel, while transportation systems allow the spatial distribution of land uses. In this video, professor Richard Wilson explains how modes of transportation influenced the evolution of urban form in four eras.
This video is an excerpt from "Transportation Planning: Land Use and Transportation Systems." This course reviews the roles of transportation systems and technology in influencing land value and locational decisions. The course also shows how integrated planning for land use and transportation systems is overcoming a historical separation that produced poor outcomes in congestion, equity, and environment in post-WW2 American cities.
