On July 10th, Turkish President Erdogan announced that the Hagia Sophia would revert to a mosque, following a ruling by a Turkish court that annulled its museum status. And this week Muslims performed the first Friday prayer at the mosque in 86 years. We look at Turkey’s legal arguments around the issue of sovereignty on administering the UNESCO site and assurances that the Hagia Sophia will still remain open to all visitors, and its Christian Mosaics preserved. We also breakdown the international reaction to the decision.
