Originally performed in MTV Hustle, Episode 4, 'Har Kadam Pe' was originally penned down by EPR Iyer after an unfortunate incident took place in G D Birla School.
How much a girl of 15/16 YO must go through, to write something like "The society has failed me." in her suicide note, before she subjects herself to a painful death by committing suicide? How much a girl studying in 10th standard, being a topper of her class, must endure, to come to a point where she thinks - "I'm no longer needed, I must go;"?
A mere teenager, studying in one of the most reputed schools in Kolkata, died from suicide; and the tragedy that hits the most is - nobody is there to take the responsibility for this loss. The school has been blamed for its utter negligence, and the family has been clueless about their daughter's deteriorating mental stability; but what nobody is speaking about is - how we as a society are driving our children to a space, where there's no light left for them. How we are pushing them to an extent, from where - there's no coming back.
In this generation of overloaded pressure and chronic competition, kids lose their way. We live in an age of ultra socialization, and yet they are left broken in emptiness. We get so worked up about their materialistic achievement and success, we often forget to care about if they're at all happy or not. And when mental unwellness, such as - anxiety, depression hit them hard - we become too ignorant about their well-being.
We take away their shot at fulfilling their own dreams, because we burden them with our failures. We talk about their bright future, and their lives are crushed even before they flourish; because we are too busy measuring them up with marks and grades.
'Har Kadam Pe' talks about the girl, who could have been a woman of her own choice, if we could provide her with the freedom to be so. Instead, she lost her faith - in us, and in herself as well.
Another blooming life faded away, into darkness.
