As the celebrations to ring in the new year of 2018 fade away.
We turn our thoughts and prayers back to 1968 and the dark winter of the triple trawler tragedy.
On the 11th January the ST ROMANUS H223 became the first trawler to be lost with all hands followed on the 26th – 27th with the KINGSTON PERIDOT H591, and on the 5th February the ROSS CLEVELAND H61, in total 58 brave fathers, brothers, & sons, were lost from our port.
The grief and the pain borne by family and friends turned to anguish and frustration at the great loss the fishing community suffered.
The women of the fishing community fronted by LILLIAN BOLOCCA stood tall and the HEAD SCARF REVOLUTIONARIES became the voice of the fishing community against the trawler owners and the labour government at the time, to force better safety standards for our fishermen.
Please take 5 minutes of your time to view this memorial video of the ships, and the brave fathers, brothers, and sons, who were lost to the sea in the dark winter of 1968
The music “GOING HOME” is a seafarer’s farewell in honour and loving memory of those who have gone before us.
Always in our prayers safely anchored.
