The motility of Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is dependent upon the parasympathetic and sympathetic control. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter in the parasympathetic nervous system, increases the GIT motility and secretions. Sympathetic nervous system has less influence on the GIT. Cholinergic drugs such as carbachol, or acetylcholinesterase inhibitors increase the GI motility, whereas the anticholinergic drugs decrease the motility. Osmosis is the principle of saline purgatives, are poorly absorbed salts saline laxatives, Milk of Magnesia, Sodium Phosphate, Lactulose, and PEG, used for evacuation of bowel scheduled for surgery. This presentation gives a brief note on effect of saline purgatives on frog intestine.
