"You Brought the Sunshine" (lead vocals: Elbernita "Twinkie" Clark Clark, Karen Clark-Sheard) - Track 1 from The Clark Sisters' iconic and legendary album, You Brought the Sunshine (1981), which was written and arranged entirely by Elbernita "Twinkie" Clark. Twinkie was inspired by Stevie Wonder's "Master Blaster" when writing this hit, giving it a unique reggae feel which initially resulted in gospel DJs giving the song little airplay. Later around the release of the group''s follow-up album Sincerely, "You Brought the Sunshine" became the group's most famous song - not only a top ten hit on the Billboard Gospel Songs chart but also (controversially) crossed over onto the R&B (#16) and Dance (#27) charts.
This resulted in the group being invited to perform at the infamous Studio 54. The song has since been covered by many artists including, Al Green, Kelly Price, Shirley Murdock, Out of Eden, Melinda Doolittle, and LeJeune Thompson.
This was recorded from my vinyl copy as the Sound of Gospel compilation set You Brought The Sunshine/Unworthy was released with the Sunshine album tracks in the wrong pitch/speed.
