An exhibition dedicated to volunteer Chechen soldiers who’ve been fighting alongside Ukrainian troops in the east has been unveiled in Kyiv’s World War Two museum. Personal belongings, flags, military gear, and national symbols belonging to the troops are among the pieces on display.
Amina Okueva, press officer of international peacekeeping battalion named after Djohar Dudaev
“For us, this is a common war. For us Chechens, this is a continuation of our own war. The enemy is the same and they’re using the same barbaric methods.”
Hundreds of Chechen fighters have joined the fighting in east Ukraine on both sides of the conflict. The two Chechen Wars with Russia made many former fighters from the Caucasus region want to take up arms against Moscow once again.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Chechen fighters loyal to Kremlin-appointed leader Ramzan Kadyrov are fighting on the side of Russian-backed militants.
