Thirteen hours of testimony about toilets –
Who can use what bathroom is the basis of a senate bill that garnered plenty of headlines this week.
Monday, ahead of the committee hearing on Senate Bill 6, several groups held rallies to express their support or distaste for the legislation that would mandate people use bathrooms in public schools, government buildings and public universities based on their “biological sex.”
Lawmakers passed the bill out of committee, but not before listening to nearly 300 people testify – the majority in opposition.
"I am terrified if this bill goes through because my daughter does not belong in the male bathroom.”
In the House, committee testimony on a bill that would require hospitals bury or cremate fetal remains got heated when several witnesses suggested the bill be amended to abolish abortion all together.
Several abortion opponents told lawmakers it doesn’t do enough because it keeps abortion legal.
The bill’s author, state Rep. Byron Cook, asked witnesses keep their remarks on his bill and not on fellow Republican Rep. Tony Tinderholt’s which seeks to completely outlaw the procedure.
Senator Ted Cruz – who for years has called for the abolishment of Obamacare – says without significant changes House Republicans’ proposed healthcare replacement is doomed in the Senate.
This week, the junior senator from Texas used a more diplomatic tone than he’s previously used on the topic when he told reporters he has concerns with the current draft, but that he’s optimistic they’ll work out the differences.
