“Positively-Absolutely” by The Portland Rosebuds (The Royal Troubadours) 1927
Vocals: Jack Kaufmann
It seems that The Portland Rosebuds orchestra was actually one of several bands that recorded for Gennett over the years. There is mention of the Nathan Glanz orchestra in the Pseudonyms on American records, 1892-1942. This record, New Electrobeam Gennett 6079, is said to actually be The Royal Troubadours in The American Dance Band Discography 1917-1942. It was recorded in New York March 22, 1927. On other labels it seems this same recording is attributed to Dick Beesen and His Orchestra, Ted Marshall and His Orchestra, and The Carnival Dance Band. What a strange practice this seems today. Anonymous bands and singers with various pseudonyms on various labels seems to cover up the actual performers names but would allow exclusive artists to record on various labels.
There are no pictures I could find of a band named the Portland Rosebuds. Since this band on this record was actually The Royal Troubadours I tried to find pictures of them as well. I could find nothing. I assume that this band was also a label band that did not really exist and was likely groups of players from other label musicians. So, images are of The Portland Rosebuds hockey team and a number of record labels from records by The Royal Troubadours.
Being from Oregon and having lived in Portland for most of my life the name The Portland Rosebuds is very familiar as two different past sports teams and a current dance team of the Portland Winterhawks hockey team are named The Rosebuds. Interestingly enough the Stanley Cup has the name of The Portland Rosebuds on it from the very early days.
Portland, Oregon, has an old and rich hockey tradition. The Cityof Roses was home to six professional hockey teams that took the ice in five different leagues, including two major league clubs. It all started with the Rosebuds (1914-1918), who earned the distinction of being the first United States-based team to compete for the Stanley Cup. The tradition continued with a second version of the Rosebuds (1925-1926), the original Buckaroos (1928-1931), a second version of the Buckaroos (1933-1941), the Eagles/Penguins (1944-1951), and the Western Hockey League (WHL) Buckaroos (1960-1974). The WHL Buckaroos won three Patrick Cup titles and iced several minor league hockey legends, including Gordon Fashoway, Guyle Fielder, Don Head, Andy Hebenton, Norm Johnson, Art Jones, Connie Madigan, and Bill Saunders. Several Hockey Hall of Famers--Tommy Dunderdale, George Hay, Dick Irvin, and Moose Johnson--also spent time on Portland teams.
